I also ventured over to the Main House to check out the sprawling rooftop pool, which was very quiet soon after sunrise. Beautiful room and lots of day beds, was always able to find a place to lounge. A relaxed, bohemian atmosphere at a small hotel in Playa del Carmen. This lovely beach getaway provides everything you need for an unforgettable vacation. Breakfast was pricey by local standards, but it quickly became clear that I had ordered a lot of food.
At just over $430 for a one-night stay in a base room, after all of the various taxes and fees, I had very high expectations for the Thompson Beach House. The check-in snafu was unfortunate but forgivable, though the staff didn't make any attempt to make up for it. In fact, at checkout, I was charged for room service that I never ordered, and the clerk even argued with me, insisting that the signatures matched a bill I had signed from the restaurant (they weren't even close). After I asked to escalate to a manager, she relented and removed the charge. For my entree, I was eyeing the whole catch of the day, which was described as "golden fish" with a pastor marinade. At $50, that was out of my solo-diner budget, though, so the waiter offered to do a filet prepared in the same style, instead. At $17, it wasn't cheap, considering the prices at local restaurants, but, boy, was it delicious.
I probably could have gotten out of there for closer to $10 and not gone hungry. There was seating for four inside, just next to the sliding door, along with a table and chairs and a comfy lounge chair of sorts on the balcony. Guests of the Beach House can take the five-minute walk to the main hotel and enjoy the fantastic infinity pool right on the roof, with seating and private cabanas. Hairdryers and a small selection of toiletries are provided, including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body moisturizer. All but entry-level King or Two Queens Rooms have separate soaking tubs, and top-tier Panoramic Balcony Suites have plunge pools on the balcony. Both properties are very much right in the action, though, so you could easily walk to restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. Housed in an angular sand-colored building with stone and wood accents and a simple glass entrance, Thompson Beach House looks modern and sleek already from the outside. The property is compact but appealing and inviting, with just about the right amount of designer touches to feel upscale yet laid-back. Although there’s a couch and a table with a couple of chairs, the lobby is the place where guests wait to be checked in rather than hang out with a drink.
With just three floors and 27 rooms, you can avoid the tourist crunch and overbearing salespeople that are all too common at large resorts. Thompson Beach House, built in 2016, is a chic little Bohemian getaway and an extension of Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel, located a couple blocks away. You could almost throw a stone into the water from the balcony of your ocean-view room—it’s that close. Private daybeds, cabanas and an oceanfront lounge are exclusively for Beach House guests. Bicycles, yoga, paddleboards and other water sports are also available on site. C Grill and Lounge is an excellent alfresco restaurant serving up wood-fire grilled seafood plus Mexican bites and ceviche, all made with local ingredients.
